Hiked out to watch the Perseid Meteor showers with Devin and Dustin. The stars were stunning, we witnessed 4 or 5 fireballs. Planned on spending the night but hiked out ~130am when we started seeing lightning to the west.
Probably the hardest <2 mile hike I've ever done. My clothes were soaked as if I had went swimming when we got out of the woods. Absolutely phenomenal view from up above balanced rock tho!
Parking was not as bad as expected, I thought there was plenty of space by the side of the road. Downed trees and falling rocks make the first 2/10ths of a mile pretty sketchy. Even though you are following blazes I'd describe the start of the hike as guided bushwhacking, at least in summer. Amazing views up top! Saw a lot of interesting fungus along this trail as well.
Waterfall was roaring! The only challenging part of this hike was the final descent down to the waterfall. The bank you have to descend with the aid of a guide rope can be very icy. In the winter, even if there is no snow and ice elsewhere, I recommend bringing yaktrax/spikes along just in case you need them for this sketchy spot.
We got a little fire going in the pit and warmed up listening to the sound of the water until the sun was about to set. What's better than a campfire right by a gorgeous waterfall!?
Views on views on views! Highly recommended, but the "hard" rating should not be taken lightly. This hike kicked my butt, took a few days for the legs to fully recover.
Paint run is a hidden gem! Dustin solo hiked in on the 20th and lost his glasses in the water. We returned the next day and he found them almost immediately! Accessing the falls in the winter is probably gonna require you to slide down on your rump. Need to remember to bring a rope!
