Foliage hike out to the water - excellent color along the way out. The water it the swamp/pond/lake was lower and the color of the foliage around it was more dull than expected, but the white birch and aspen trees that line the shores are a nice sight.
Service road gate is open for hunting as of Oct 13 and closes around January 16, 2023. Came back twice for photos and decided to drive the road to the summit, but walk to the view down the mtn. Photos from Oct 13 evening and Oct 14 morning. Grand View!
Cruised out to the vistas with Jax to snap some shots of the foliage around lunch time. Luckily I caught a break in the rain and no one else was interested in hiking the trail at the time, so we had the entire place to ourselves. Peaceful and scenic.
Brought Jax back to his rock for some foliage shots of the canyon. Hiked down to see the big waterfall (Step Falls) from its base for the 1st time then ventured just a bit further to see Little Step Falls. Hiked back upstream to hit Slab Falls, Upper Bear Run Falls, and then out past the old-growths.
Enjoyed a nice sunset hike out to the Dry Hollow Vista with Dustin and Sam. Also checked-off another cut-out in the trees to the east - turns out it's actually a vista, but requires bushwhacking and is most-likely a rattlesnake den. Regardless, the new off-trail route provided in the map can lead experienced hikers through a bushwhack out to a nice view of the Ansonia Ridge. Making this hike about 2.9-miles out-and-back. Most people should skip the Ansonia Ridge vista and stick to the main route, which is 2.4-miles out-and-back instead.
Brought Dustin and Sam on this hike for their first summit of Stony Peak! Cleared brush on the way up to the summit, cutting out a bunch of thorn bushes. Left the trail registry box, a trail log for visitors to sign, and some MyHikes stickers. If you sign the registry, please leave it in a visible location and leave the rocks inside the box so the wind doesn't blow it away, thanks! Fire foliage of Potter County's mountainous plateau - nice oranges, yellows, and reds, especially in the foreground to the massive stand of evergreens in the distance.
Beautiful foliage hike to the summit of Stony Peak. Awesome views at the top, but very windy and the wind doesn't really calm down much at all. Overgrowth leading to the summit is a bit much, I need to come back to clear it out.
Super cool walk with large rock ledges that can be easily hiked to the top, approximately 35-40 feet tall at the highest. Trail name is technically the "Ledge Trail" and follows blue blazes. On our hike we found a "face" in one of the rocks - check the map's POI for where this rock is located. The western half of the trail is the most interesting as hikers wind in and out of large rocky outcroppings. Once the hiker passes the Blueberry Trail - an orange-blazed bisecting trail - the remainder of the hike is mostly flat with not much to see or explore, but is still a nice walk in the woods. This hike was about 1.5-miles long including some small out-and-back walks to the top of the ledges.
Nice short walk in late August. Goldenrod and other wildflowers were in bloom along with some wild grapes growing on vines. We followed a different path than the original walk here for about 0.8 miles instead of the 0.6 of the outer loop.
Came back on a mid-week lunch break to take some shots with Jax. Ended up getting poured on on my hike out, which sent me back to the car. Waited for the storm to pass, then got out to the vista and snagged some fog lifting out of Pine Creek Gorge.
Came back the following day to enjoy the waterfalls again while the water was low. Brought Nina and Jax - was difficult with a small dog, but we managed both the hillside scramble and rock scramble. Will not bring Jax back here.
