Fourmile Run

Colton Point State Park
Gaines, PA
1.7 miles / 2.7 km
July 25, 2022
Cruised out to Fourmile Run to shoot Fourmile Falls with Dustin Riehl using our DSLRs before sunset. Learned a thing or two from Dustin and got some dope shots of the waterfall. The off-trail scramble to reach Log Jam Falls / Fourmile Run from the Turkey Path is just sketchy - we had to use the roots of the trees to ensure our safety while scrambling down the steep terrain. This area should really have some switchbacks built into the hillside. Fourmile Run was flowing a bit heavier than my first trip here during the previous week since it'd rained and stormed the previous day/night. The bedrock in the creek was more slippery than on the first trip, so I walked more in the creek to get my feet wet while following sections of moss on the rocks for more friction and grip. Total trip took 1 hour 45 minutes which included at least 15 minutes to shoot the waterfalls in addition to walking very slowly within the creek and its bank.

Peaceful Sunday walk out to Barbour Rock. Parking lot was empty when we showed up around 10AM, indicating 2022 is "back to normal" around here.

Makawehi & Pa'a Dunes Loop

Koloa Heritage Trail
Koloa, HI

2nd hike back on Makawehi and the Pa'a Dunes before leaving the Koloa area. This is one of my favorite spots to walk/hike in southern Kauai, especially since you can get awesome views of the coastline without being baked too badly by the sun. Walk as far as you want, the easterly views don't disappoint.

Cherry Springs Fire Tower

Susquehannock State Forest
Abbott, PA

June 20, 2022
Fun walk exploring the old Cherry Springs Fire Tower with Alvie. The structure appears to be the original metal structure from the late 19-teens, but maybe parts (or the entire thing) was rebuilt at some point in time. Apparently these fire towers were decommissioned in the 1960s in favor of using satellite technology to detect forest fires. The old tower watchman’s cabin looks to be in good condition from the outside. Nice day-use fire ring outside of the cabin as well. No camping allowed here.

Mt. Tom Loop

Tioga State Forest
Wellsboro, PA
2.6 miles / 4.2 km
June 19, 2022
Climbed Mt. Tom via the service road and then hiked the steep route to the vista. Found lots of late Spring wildflowers along the trail, saw an insane amount of gypsy/spongy moths eating all of the greenery, and carried one stone up to the vista to add to the pile, like the other hiker's did recently.

Mt. Washington via Ammonoosuc Ravine Trail and Jewell Trail

White Mountain National Forest
Randolph, NH
10.0 miles / 16.1 km
June 04, 2022
First time hiking Mt. Washington - did the loop with Jon (Johnnybegoo) and Tom (Tocra). The ascent was exactly what we expected - brutal and long, but it was more enjoyable than anticipated as the creek crossings, waterfalls, and views on the way up made for nice stops. Scrambling along the Ammonoosuc Trail began at the wooden ladder and ended just before Lakes of the Clouds hut. We ate an early lunch at the Lakes of the Clouds, backtracked to the hut and hit the restrooms, grabbed a coffee, coffeecake, an AMC trail map, and some patches, then we hiked to the summit of Mt. Monroe. When we got to the top of Monroe, we had the summit to ourselves. Regarding foot traffic, by the time we'd reached the AMC hut (Lakes of the Clouds hut), we'd only seen ~10 other hikers! This trek was "quiet" after Memorial Day Weekend. After visiting Mt. Monroe we started the journey up Mt. Washington which took just over 1-hour to hike the ~1.5-miles and 1,200+ more feet of vertical elevation gain to reach the summit. Along the way, we got awesome views of the Lakes of the Clouds hut and Mt. Monroe as we ascended Mt. Washington via Crawford Path. Once on the summit, we had our photos taken by the sign, then meandered around the top to get views. The wind was whipping. Took a small break, grabbed a bite to eat, and sent out 2 postcards from the summit post office, then we started the descent. Hiked the Trinity Heights Connector Trail down to the Crawford Path / AT to reach the Gulfside Trail which sits within the Great Gulf Wilderness. We were able to catch several Cog Rail trains making their way up Mt. Washington from this part of the mountain before we reached the Jewell Trail to make our way out. The Jewell Trail was beautiful and gave the last views of Mt. Washington, the Presidential Range, and the mountain ravines and valleys below. We watched a small rainstorm roll in and prepared for a light sun-shower here. One small waterfall before the parking lot. ~11-hours of hiking.

Hiked the trail in full out-and-back for the first time in 2 years. Miles reported via the Horse Run Old Growth Hemlocks route. Uploaded some new photos including an old apple tree in the middle of a clearing - which usually indicates an old farmstead.

Paint Run Falls & Dave's Waterfall Paradise

State Game Lands 268
Morris, PA
2.6 miles / 4.2 km
May 22, 2022
3rd trip here in ~5 weeks. Brought Sam and Dustin up Paint Run following Dave's Waterfall Paradise to reach Paint Run Falls. Nettles have grown in quite a lot along the banks of the creek, making this hike more difficult if wearing shorts since that forces hikers to walk up the creek instead. Some rocks in the creek are extremely slippery, making for a precarious and slightly dangerous hike upstream. Be careful, read the warnings before heading out if attempting this hike. It was slow going up the creek, we took couple of breaks to enjoy the water and cascades. Scrambles up the rock ledges at Jax Falls and Paint Run Falls need ropes and potentially a couple of small metal ladders - a possible project for the near-future.

Retoured Paint Run, this time with Tony from HikingUpward.com. We followed the creek beyond where I left it last time with Jax. Passing Jax Falls, Red Slab Falls, and finally reached the 30-foot cascade of Paint Run Falls. Updated the page to include more info on this trek.

Stony Peak & Twin Top Peak

Susquehannock State Forest
Abbott, PA
4.5 miles / 7.2 km
May 14, 2022
Original scouting trek with Tony (HikingUpward) - we were out at Hammersley Wild Area exploring sections of the Shang Hollow Trail area when on our way out, we stopped at a logging clear-cut when we spotted "Stony Peak" in the distance. Stony Peak was cut out by loggers approximately ~5 year ago, circa 2017, leaving the top of the mountain's rocky peak exposed with 360-degree views. We decided it'd be fun to try and summit the peak, so we followed a combination of deer trails and an old logging grade (total bushwhack) that led up the eastern side of the mountain - this is by-far the more difficult ascent and an alternative route to the top. Once at the top, we found a pipeline view and low-growing shrubs and thorns littering the forest floor between the service road and the top of Stony Peak. We bushwhacked out through the thorny overgrowth, following an old logging road, to just below the top of Stony Peak. Struck with "Summit Fever", I attempted to bushwhack through the thorns in several sections to reach the summit; however, we were clearly exhausted because we didn't notice the service road simply curved around the mountain to reach the top! On that day, we gave up on summitting Stony Peak (I came back the next day to summit) and decided to head south to explore that area a bit. To the south, we found more logging activity - as recent as of 2021, where yet another mountain "knob" was deforested, with more 360-degree views! These two mountain knobs, located south of Stony Peak, look like a camel's back, hence the name - Camel Hump Knob. As of May 2022, the northern hump of "Camel Back Mountain", has been deforested, allowing hikers to get grand views of the surrounding mountain tops, including a view of Elk Lick Knob in the Hammersley Wild Area.
