Some great views that I finally knocked off my list of hikes to-do! The hike is pretty easy in, one of the straightest hikes I have ever taken but the old road is thick with brush in places. The spine was a fun little section, but being this time of year, it is nice and green, but lacking views.
We backpacked into Stony Peak to hammock camp and star gaze during peak Perseids. We had a great sunset, I captured faint Northern Lights, but clouds moved in spoiling the meteor shower. We woke up to a great sunrise and a morning rainbow over the peak. Stony Peak is a special place!
This is a great short hike that I did with the family while driving Skyline Drive. We didn't quite make the complete loop due to a Timber Rattlesnake on the trail and a storm coming. It's a hike I would do again
We hiked into Hounds Run Falls after some recent rain and it had a great flow for summer. We got our feet wet on some water crossings and had a great time hanging out at the waterfall for a brief summer outing.
I took a late evening hike on Barbour Rock Trail to take some astro photos from the vistas. It did not disappoint, but then again, these views never do! I had a great vantage point of the Milky Way. Due to the darkness, the view of the canyon and creek itself was not that visible.
I started this from the DCNR office and hiked CW. I have driven to Bull Run Vista previously, but the hike makes the view more rewarding! The trails were well maintained and pass by interesting rock outcroppings at the abandoned quarry.
I have hiked to the vista many times, but this was the first time I have done the loop. I hiked counter clockwise taking Turkey Vulture Trail first. This trail doesn't seem to get as much use and was overgrown in places. It also had some downed trees including a spot that was quite challenging to get through, but was doable. The vista was great as always and I was able to watch the rain storm come my way which I didn't mind as it cooled me down.
This is an amazing place to visit, the night before we endured a wicked storm with strong winds while tent camping in ANF and then to visit a place where steel was taken down by wind and to be able to walk near and see the twisted steel. It reminds you the true power of nature. The hike is steep in places with some big steps on large stones, but well worth the effort. My GPX includes the walk out on the skywalk.
I made another trip to the pedestal, this time as an evening hike, my previous visits were in the morning. I did come across two timber rattlesnakes. It's definitely an area to use extreme caution when navigating to the views. Like my first visit, I was able to watch a Bald Eagle fly around from the vista.
I took my family and did an Out-and-back to the Rock City portion of the trail. This is one of my favorite places and it was fun to meander through the huge boulders. This place never disappoints even on a chilly April day with not much foliage on the trees
One of my favorite local hikes and knocked this one out again, this time with Janelle. The views are always good, but looking forward to seeing more green back on the trees and in the Loyalsock Valley.
I completed this hike after several days of rain so I had expectations of a good flow at the falls and was not disappointed. MST and Water Tank Trails were easy to follow, I did divert near the double falls dropping down into the run. This area was very rugged and I had to use caution as I moved around the waterfalls. I continued down to the rail trail and was able to also enjoy distance views of seasonal waterfalls on the opposite side of Pine Creek. I then followed the rail trail to Benjamin Hollow and was surprised to also see some falls on Clay Mine Run and again looking across the creek at Dillon Hollow. I hiked up Benjamin Hollow a short distance to capture a couple photos and then retraced my steps back.
