Gorgas Creek Cave Loop

Wissahickon Valley Park
Philadelphia, PA
16.3 miles / 26.2 km
February 08, 2025
Such a peaceful area that doesn’t feel like you’re in a city at all! Love all the beautiful masonry & interesting history that blends in nicely to nature! Covered the entire stretch from Northwestern Ave to Ridge Ave trail running, but stopping for lots of photos. Nice that you can stick to the wide/easy Forbidden Dr, or go up the hills for even less people & other scenery on the yellow & orange trails. Perfect pre-Super Bowl adventure - Go Birds!

Zindel Falls and Keller Reservoir Loop

Zindel Park
Lock Haven, PA
3.4 miles / 5.5 km

Fun family hike - mostly easy hiking past old structures & up to reservoir, then more challenging on west side heading back. Also added quick climb up Goat path trail to see nice vista. Beautiful afternoon!

Ramsey Vista Pipeline Hike

Tiadaghton State Forest
Ramsey, PA
8.1 miles / 13.0 km
December 14, 2024
Perfectly frosty sunrise hike up to the amazing Stone Cutter vista where the entire ridge-line had ice-coated trees! Looped down Stone Cutter trail with cascading Bonnell Run all the way back to Pine Creek. Next headed straight up the pipeline cut all the way to Bull Run #3 vista (which was quite strenuous but easier this time of year with the tall grass flattened & frozen). Such expansive views of Pine Creek gorge including the frost-covered ridge-line of Stone Cutter! Then hiked the forest roads to MST, then MST with a nice coating of snow back down the mtn to the rail trail & back to start at Ramsey. So many amazing loop options in this area!

Tiadaghton Trail to Old Wagon Road Loop

Tiadaghton State Forest
Waterville, PA
6.2 miles / 10.0 km
December 14, 2024
Been wanting to do this hike for a while since I've always seen the rock ledges that seemed like they would offer some nice views. Even though this was my 3rd strenuous hike of the day, the switchbacks made the climb up the Tiadaghton trail much nicer. Only required some short off-trail in a few sports to check out the rock outcrops with some nice views (just need to be very careful, as the drop-offs are big/dangerous). It was neat to see over to Bull Run#1 where I had just hiked earlier in the day! Once reaching the old grade section for the last gradual climb to the ridge, there are nice Hemlocks to brighten things up even when winter hiking. There is a really nice vista facing over to Upper Pine Bottom. I then continued on Tiadaghton Trail all the way past the Gleason trail & across Huntley Rd to the excellent vista facing over Little Pine Creek gorge (which I hiked up to last Fall from Little Pine SP)! Some wet spots up on the ridge, but also mostly frozen. Backtracked to Gleason trail and went down that (plenty of switchbacks but rocky, so couldn't trail run too fast). A nice cascading stream in the steep valley going down the trail all the way down to the Old Wagon Trail & Rail Trail. I stayed on the Wagon Road which offers a nice perspective being slightly elevated from the rail trail. Only saw 1 couple & 1 hunter the entire loop. Another amazing day around the Pine Creek gorge!

Bull Run Vista Loop

Tiadaghton State Forest
Waterville, PA
3.6 miles / 5.8 km
December 14, 2024
Started from Waterville Rail trail parking since I hiked Tiadaghton Trail later in afternoon. After crossing Pine Creek on the road, headed up Eiger Trail which is a good challenge but not super steep. Old Quarry rocks to enjoy along the way. Definitely worth the climb for the spectacular Pine Creek gorge view at Bull Run #1! Gave me even more appreciation that my young daughter was able to do this climb when we hiked it last year! Nice blanket of snow along ridge through the green Laurel, then trail ran down Log Slide. The Hemlocks make this section really enjoyable! Another excellent Pine Creek gorge hike with wonderful trails!

Stone Cutter Vista Loop

Tiadaghton State Forest
Ramsey, PA

Enjoyed a frosty sunrise hike up to the awesome Stone Cutter vista! All of the trees were iced over along the ridge line, as well as over on Houselander Mtn. This is a great option for those looking for a shorter and less strenuous hike than many other Pine Creek gorge climbs. I chose to continue for a longer hike, so took the southern Stone Cutter trail loop which follows a wide old grade with a nice cascading Bonnell Run back to the rail trail & Pine Creek. Then the real challenge began climbing straight up the pipeline cut all the way to Bull Run #3 vista (which has such expansive Pine Creek gorge views! Then I trail ran on the forest road to MST (nicely coated with snow) which I used to hike back down to the rail trail. The tributary streams that MST crosses were flowing nicely with the southern-most one having nice cascading falls. Ramsey is such a great starting point for short & long loop options!

Hanging Rock Overlook

Tiadaghton State Forest
Waterville, PA
6.0 miles / 9.7 km

Even though you can drive up, I earned my view with a challenging hike up the MST starting at Dam Run Rd (small pull-off for 1 car about 1/4 mile up from where MST crosses the forest rd). First part of climb was hard but neat views up hollow to distract, then once to Tram Rd trail, it was wide, straight, & gradual to finish the climb to the gas pad road. Able to run once on gravel Rebound Rd which leads to Ramsey Rd for the remaining road to vista. Tried to do a more direct/shortcut route at first, but there is deer fencing blocking & making the forest floor grown in, plus the pipeline flat area has tall grass that isn't worth hiking through. Wow, what an impressive 180 degree view of the Pine Creek gorge (one of best for sure), and even better being near sunset! Cool mountain view facing downstream to Ramsey, and then creek views upstream toward Waterville! Will definitely return here (even if I just drive up next time)! Still a great hike too!

Bob Webber Trail

Tiadaghton State Forest
Cammal, PA
3.9 miles / 6.3 km
October 26, 2024
Beautiful Fall day with still plenty of foliage color to enjoy! Started up Bob Webber Trail (my first time) but was most excited to take the side trek down to Pine Cliff vista which I have been to before and loved! So unique having a 180 degree view so low/closer to creek level! Challenging but gradual climb up BW trail to Wolf Bald vista with a great view over to Raven's Horn along the edge, and then some switchbacks to ease the climb. Really enjoyed the main vista mostly b/c it allowed me to see all of my other favorite vistas in the area (Raven's Horn/GET, Half Dome, Hemlock Mtn, Gas Line Terrace, Slate Run, Cedar Run, & Hilborn)!
Hiking

Dry Hollow Trail

Tioga State Forest
Ansonia, PA
2.5 miles / 4.0 km
October 19, 2024
Afternoon family hike with my wife and daughter - chose this since it's modest elevation and a wide/easy trail. Loved the forest road drive up to start at the secluded and neat old fire tower cabin! Peaceful hike down Dry Hollow trail to a very nice west-facing vista over the Rt.6 valley! The only downside was a ladybug swarm at the vista likely due to the summer-like temps - thankfully they are friendly! Enjoyed the peak Fall foliage!
Hiking

Snyder Point Vista Trail (Juniper Rock)

Leonard Harrison State Park
Wellsboro, PA
2.1 miles / 3.4 km

Had the pleasure of hiking here with Dustin & Sam showing me around their home turf on a beautiful mid-day with peak Fall foliage to enjoy! Loved the seclusion of this hike, the Pine plantation, the cool old dam, and of course the seldom-seen views of the Pine Creek gorge from the east rim here! Both vistas were excellent - the north facing one very unique/able to see Barbour Rock, and Snyder Point/Juniper while had to be very careful dropping down to the rock outcrop, was such an expansive 180 degree views over to Colton Point SP (including Little Jax overlook which I had just hiked the previous day). Thankful for this special area and getting to explore with such amazing people!

Family sunset hike at Leonard Harrison SP enjoying the amazing east rim views. Our first time hiking down to Otter View which we had all to ourselves! The colorful sunset glows and peak Fall foliage made for a perfect way to start our family vacation!

Little Jax Rock Overlook

Tioga State Forest
Wellsboro, PA

I have been wanting to hike here for years since seeing the rock outcrop from down on the rail trail. Late afternoon hike once arrived for my family vacation. Nice to start on WRT, then dropped off-trail down the steep bank to check out the bigger waterfall on Bear Run (beautiful even though barely flowing). The bright sun didn't make for best view & photos, but still a great perspective of Pine Creek gorge surrounded by peak Fall foliage! Went back down to enjoy hiking up Bear Run for the other smaller waterfalls. Perfect short hike - just have to be careful with those steep banks!
