I love snow hikes & definitely love Tiadaghton State Forest! Challenging doing all the climbs with snow on the trails, but so peaceful too! Started at Little Pine SP, up Love Run for an easy start, then MST/Pesto climb, then Torbert trail all the way across & down to Pine Creek. Next up Callahan Run trail to the old quarry & amazing vista over valley which was the best part of day after seeing 1st coyote in wild too! Once back down, hiked up Big Fork Trail, then north on Okome Rd to Love Run Trail down, then 1 more shorter climb up MST before the Panther Run trail with cool rock formations back down to Little Pine! Perfect day in the PA Wilds!
Accessed using Pine Creek Rail trail from Blackwell (still plenty of snow). Lower falls easier to get to w/ right side old grade, but then ropes & super steep drop-off to get past for the upper double falls. Able to climb above the falls that you can normally stand behind to the double split w/ the right branch having blue ice & could stand behind! This still looks best & is safer in Spring with good flow. Already linked activity to Pine Island since I continued all the way to that vista & run for total of 12miles,but would be about 6 for just Water Tank.
May look easy on this map, but very challenging running on the snow-covered Pine Creek Rail trail, and then even more challenging heading up to see the frozen Water Tank Hollow falls and Pine Island vista + falls! Lower falls easier to get to w/ right side old grade, but then ropes & super steep drop-off to get past for the upper double falls. Able to climb above the falls that you can normally stand behind to the double split w/ the right branch having blue ice & could stand behind! The climb up & decent of Pine Island was tough but not dangerous. PI Run able to use left side grade, then very tough w/ steep banks to the falls that were flowing & had nice ice walls on left. Gorgeous blue-sky day in 40’s after starting in 20’s! I Love Pine Creek - truly hiking perfection in every season!
Nice Fall day to explore here for 1st time - mix of trail running & hiking for challenging off-trail down from overlook to check out Schull’s Rock from below, then head towards Shock’s Mill bridge which was easier with river so low. Easier going once back on Mason-Dixon trail back over to Kinsley Nature Preserve with 2 more great river vistas & peaceful woods!
Have stopped at House Rock on many Conestoga Trail adventures heading to Tucquan Glen! This recording includes both the vista & Wind Cave - you can also make this a full loop now that there are more defined trails at Clark Nature Preserve up through the meadow area. Fun hike starting down Goodno trail & then up Conestoga Trail with excellent overlook of Susquehanna River, then exploring cave which was perfectly refreshing blowing out cold air with the hot/humid temps outside! Also got to enjoy lots of wild berries along the trail! You can explore the top section of the cave safely just to get the feel of pure darkness, but if you want to fully explore, you need to have proper gear (headlamp, helmet), a map of the cave which is extensive and has multiple levels with only 2 openings, and don't go alone! Believed to be the largest tectonic cave on the East Coast!
Stopped here after hike nearby at Otter Creek. Easy, open field walk with loop options - part of Mason-Dixon Trail system. Very expansive view of Susq. River up to Wrightsville Bridge and down to Turkey Hill.
Been to Chickies Rock many times over the years - great for a short hike to a great Susq. River view (very popular, so often busy). Started with hike to Chickies Rock overlook, then drove over to Breezyview Dr overlook to hike down steep Heritage trail to rail trail where daughter rode her scooter while I ran with her. Stopped at the big rock tunnel heading south, then all the way north to the base of Chickies Rock (which is super impressive to see from below - often will find rock climbers here) before turning around and climb back up hill.
A nice place to stop for a view of the Susquehanna River and have a lunch at the Gazebo or benches. Can park here for hike down to NW Lancaster County River Trail close to the old rail tunnel.
Beautiful, sunny afternoon hike with my daughter! Easy hiking overall - mostly open fields to amazing Star Rock overlook along Susquehanna River (faces over to Cuffs Run which is a great Mason-Dixon Trail hike)! Took trail down to Enola Low Grade, then up Mann’s Run falls & Turkey Hill Trail back to start. Perfect hike to enjoy together after doing Turkey Hill Experience earlier!
Climbed mountain (off-trail straight up) just before sunrise for amazing view over Lycoming Valley with Fall foliage colors near peak! Got to enjoy a rainbow as sun came out with a little rain! Once back down, drove up & hiked down to both middle & upper falls of Rock Run (1 of 2 most beautiful streams in all of PA that I love visiting). A big Bald Eagle was perched on a tree above the falls - such a fascinating & unexpected encounter being so close!
Still one of my favorite waterfall hikes - 3rd time doing & Fall easily the best to the beautiful colors of the trees to go along with the 5-6 awesome waterfalls! Off-trail fun rock scrambling with some steep parts, then easy old grade to take back down. Previously hiked with my daughter when she was 5 & did awesome, then the most challenging was doing in complete snow/ice (before I had micro-spikes which make winter hikes so much safer & easier)! Always combine with Rock Run's Middle & Upper Falls when visiting here - truly 1 of my favorite places in PA to explore!
