Pine Island Vistas

Tioga State Forest
Stony Fork, PA
2.3 miles / 3.7 km
October 10, 2025
Easy downhill to start on unmarked trail after forest road drive up which was in good shape, then old grade down to Pine Island Run which was so dry that easier to just walk straight down creek. Never mind the steep climb up the spine with loose rocks & downed leaves, b/c it leads to my favorite view in all of PA! Spent lots of time enjoying view on a beautiful Fall morning! Recording stopped, so hike back down & then to start separate. 5.44 miles total (walked down to Pine Creek for up close view before heading back).

Chimney Rock Vista Hike

Tioga State Forest
Cedar Run, PA
2.8 miles / 4.5 km
October 11, 2025
Fun family hike to Chimney Rock vista overlooking Pine Creek in Cedar Run! Opted for the longer & very challenging forest road drive up (only possible in high clearance AWD due to pond-size potholes). This makes the hike easier than climbing up Bull Run trail (which I have done solo before). Beautiful, easy hiking through the Pine & Laurel tunnels along the ridge with 1 nice vista along the way. Then it’s a steep descent to get to the main vista (which you have to climb back up since this is an out-back hike). One of the best Pine Creek gorge views, especially getting to see the rail trail bridge below & Twin Mtn in the distance! Large rock outcrop to relax at with American flag waving. Had the view all to ourselves!

Amphitheater Falls

Tioga State Forest
Wellsboro, PA
2.4 miles / 3.9 km
October 12, 2025
Beautiful Fall afternoon for family hike up Campbell Run from Tiadaghton access of Pine Creek rail trail! We mostly walked straight up stream since so dry - awesome finding so many fossil rocks! Sun shining down on Campbell Run Falls with Eastern Newt right behind falls! Took our time climbing up the steep bank & ladder with rope to get above falls. Next enjoyed the awe-inspiring Amphitheater Falls! Once back to start, walked along Pine Creek for a bit for a perfect end to the day!
Hiking

Pine Creek Trail (Wellsboro Extension)

Wellsboro, PA
3.3 miles / 5.3 km
October 10, 2025
Jogging alongside my daughter on bike - nice to go straight from Lodge to rail trail northern terminus in Wellsboro! All of the new bridges are great to stop & look down over the creek crossings, and the big Pines were impressive! Will be even nicer once the full trail extension is open soon to fully connect. Beautiful Fall late afternoon.

West Rim Trail

Tioga State Forest
Wellsboro, PA
15.6 miles / 25.1 km

Normally this wouldn’t be too bad of a ride for forest roads (which were in great shape), but after already hiking 16+ miles(WRT-northern terminus to Bradley Wales), I was so exhausted. Fun riding fast down the hills, but even though the climbs were gradual, it was easier to just walk with my bike to keep my legs from cramping. Most fun was the last downhill where I was cruising over 30mph the whole way from Colton Point, especially since it is paved & has big curves! What a day! I've also done a hike/bike combo for the WRT-southern terminus up to Bradley Wales & back. Both were amazing, but the northern section is the best for both the hike and bike parts.

West Rim Trail

Tioga State Forest
Wellsboro, PA
16.5 miles / 26.6 km
September 27, 2025
Definitely a challenging hike, but so worth the effort! Trail ran a decent amount, but took my time enjoying the breath-taking views & ridge sections! Spent about 30 minutes at Barbour Rock watching it go from full fog to fully clear - magical for sure! Several other vistas to enjoy including off-trail down to Little Jax vista. Ice Break vista was my other favorite (180 degree view & a big campsite)! Trail in excellent shape & such a great diversity of forest! After making it back to Bradley Wales where my bike was, time for a 15+ mile bike ride back to the northern terminus! I’ve done the same hike/bike combo from southern terminus to BW.
Hiking

Francis X. Kennedy Trail

Rider Park
Trout Run, PA
6.4 miles / 10.3 km
September 20, 2025
I have done the Katy Jane loop before, so this time did the north-side outer loops (Green, Cheryl’s, & a few others out to boundary w/ state forest). This park is so well-maintained, clearly marked everywhere, lots of loop options, and 4 amazing views! Many Pines & Hemlocks to enjoy, and lots of peaceful forest! Mostly double-wide trails, so great for trail running or hiking!
Hiking

Sandy Bottom Vista

State Game Lands 134
Hillsgrove, PA
1.8 miles / 2.9 km
September 20, 2025
One of best views in entire Loyalsock, and seldom seen since off-trail! Somewhat long drive up game road, but in pretty good shape, then plenty of parking. Start hike on Huckle Run Rd, then at bottom of small hill w/ big tree on each side of rd, head into forest right with lots of Pines making it more open. Trickier once closer to ledge with 2 rock tiers to drop below. Awesome rock pedestal to stand on for best view (180 degrees w/ creek bend & mountains on both sides), but have to be careful with huge drop-off!
Hiking

Smiths Knob Hike

Loyalsock State Forest
Barbours, PA
5.7 miles / 9.2 km
September 20, 2025
Love this loop! The climb up is a challenge, but the spectacular 180 degree view at Smith’s Knob is well worth the effort! Definitely recommend following the LT down to loop with Painter Run trail which is so peaceful! Does require about a half-mile on the forest road, but barely any traffic.
Hiking

Rough Hill Trail

Loyalsock State Forest
Barbours, PA
1.5 miles / 2.4 km
September 20, 2025
This is lesser known, but if you can only do a shorter/easier hike, this is a great option! 2 awesome views! If you do the right side of the loop up, it’s steeper/harder, or left for more gradual. I parked right along Rt.87 (only 100yds up from where the trail crosses the road. Previously parked down at Sandy Bottom which makes the hike a bit longer.
Hiking

Pigeon Run & Atticus Falls

State Game Lands 13
Jamison City, PA
4.8 miles / 7.7 km
May 09, 2025
One of my favorite off-trail waterfall hikes in all of PA! Rained all day, but everything flowing perfectly for non-stop waterfalls on the Sullivan Branch & Pigeon Run! Sullivan Falls to start morn, then after trail to start, the challenging hike up Sullivan Branch with slippery rocks hiking in & along water. Went up around Atticus Falls before turning back at Hunts Run (have done the full branch before). Used grade/trail back, then did all of Pigeon Run which is so amazing!
Hiking

Cold Run Waterfalls & Vista Loop

Worlds End State Park
Forksville, PA
2.8 miles / 4.5 km
July 18, 2025
Enjoyed a trail run at dusk starting from campground, up Cold Run trail, then added extension to see the smaller waterfalls with at least some flow (often dry). Love the Boulder section the most! Prospect Rock vista was great (nicer than Cold Run vista but not as good as Canyon Vista). Used LT & CV trail back down to camp. Trails in excellent shape!
