Sandy Bottom Vista

State Game Lands 134
Hillsgrove, PA
1.8 miles / 2.9 km
September 20, 2025
One of best views in entire Loyalsock, and seldom seen since off-trail! Somewhat long drive up game road, but in pretty good shape, then plenty of parking. Start hike on Huckle Run Rd, then at bottom of small hill w/ big tree on each side of rd, head into forest right with lots of Pines making it more open. Trickier once closer to ledge with 2 rock tiers to drop below. Awesome rock pedestal to stand on for best view (180 degrees w/ creek bend & mountains on both sides), but have to be careful with huge drop-off!

Smiths Knob Hike

Loyalsock State Forest
Barbours, PA
5.7 miles / 9.2 km
September 20, 2025
Love this loop! The climb up is a challenge, but the spectacular 180 degree view at Smith’s Knob is well worth the effort! Definitely recommend following the LT down to loop with Painter Run trail which is so peaceful! Does require about a half-mile on the forest road, but barely any traffic.

Rough Hill Trail

Loyalsock State Forest
Barbours, PA
1.5 miles / 2.4 km
September 20, 2025
This is lesser known, but if you can only do a shorter/easier hike, this is a great option! 2 awesome views! If you do the right side of the loop up, it’s steeper/harder, or left for more gradual. I parked right along Rt.87 (only 100yds up from where the trail crosses the road. Previously parked down at Sandy Bottom which makes the hike a bit longer.
Hiking

Pigeon Run & Atticus Falls

State Game Lands 13
Jamison City, PA
4.8 miles / 7.7 km
May 09, 2025
One of my favorite off-trail waterfall hikes in all of PA! Rained all day, but everything flowing perfectly for non-stop waterfalls on the Sullivan Branch & Pigeon Run! Sullivan Falls to start morn, then after trail to start, the challenging hike up Sullivan Branch with slippery rocks hiking in & along water. Went up around Atticus Falls before turning back at Hunts Run (have done the full branch before). Used grade/trail back, then did all of Pigeon Run which is so amazing!
Hiking

Cold Run Waterfalls & Vista Loop

Worlds End State Park
Forksville, PA
2.8 miles / 4.5 km
July 18, 2025
Enjoyed a trail run at dusk starting from campground, up Cold Run trail, then added extension to see the smaller waterfalls with at least some flow (often dry). Love the Boulder section the most! Prospect Rock vista was great (nicer than Cold Run vista but not as good as Canyon Vista). Used LT & CV trail back down to camp. Trails in excellent shape!
Hiking

Angel Falls Loop

Loyalsock State Forest
Muncy Valley, PA
2.8 miles / 4.5 km
July 18, 2025
First time getting to hike the LT re-route up Falls Run (have done it off-trail several times before). Beautiful, flat stream hike to start, then fairly steep climb up but totally worth it for both Gipson Falls and Angel Falls! Also worth climbing all the way to the top of Angel falls to look out over the gorge! One of the most awe-inspiring waterfalls in PA! Happy to get to hike this together as a family (wife & daughter), since I’ve hiked it solo & just with my daughter previously! Flowing nicely after rain earlier in week!
Hiking

Valley Creek Dam Falls Hike

Valley Forge National Historical Park
King of Prussia, PA
7.7 miles / 12.4 km
June 01, 2025
My daughter & I really enjoyed this bigger loop that included a little bit of everything, & so many different trail types! So many options here & could easily double this mileage! Beautiful day for the perfect combination of nature & history! Went CCW starting from Washington’s headquarters, then Horseshoe, Valley Creek, several others, & looping back via Mt.Joy which was my favorite!
Hiking

Hetchell's Tooth Cliffs Hike

State Game Lands 141
Jim Thorpe, PA
10.8 miles / 17.4 km
August 02, 2025
An awesome loop that lets you experience the best of the Lehigh Gorge both from up on the ridge, as well as down on the rail trail & river level! A good climb up the overlook trail to start, then several vistas (on & off-trail). The off-trails are challenging & require experience. Looped down Rabbit Patch trail which was in really good shape & easy to follow all the way to the rail trail. Easy running on rail trail with some side-treks down to the river for up-close views. Finished going to bridge crossing over the river with a beautiful view (then drove to hike up Mt.Pisgah incline where you can see the same bridge from the overlook)! Perfect weather feeling more like June or Sept than early August.

Darling Run Falls

Tioga State Forest
Wellsboro, PA
0.5 miles / 0.8 km
April 11, 2025
I didn't hike to this spot which is farther downstream, but highly recommend the short hike off-trail down from the intersection of Darling Run & Copp Hollow Rds (open pull-off parking area). Used left/south bank down to beautiful multi-tier falls that is very photogenic!
Hiking

Pinafore Falls

Tioga State Forest
Wellsboro, PA
4.4 miles / 7.1 km
April 11, 2025
I also attached my GPX for this hike to the Pinafore/East Rim lookout trail, but can comment here too since I hiked the entire way up Pinafore Run from the rail trail starting at Darling Run. Off-trail hike the entire way up with rock scrambling, climbing directly up falls, and two steep bank climbs for gorged in spots. I can see why it is recommended not to try this, but I am very experienced in off-trail waterfall hiking and very athletic, so was safe taking my time. Definitely wouldn't want to have to hike back down the same way though! Counted 15 waterfalls - non-stop amazingness in a rugged setting that very few people ever explore! Upper-most falls has bridge to nowhere, then able to use the Pinafore trail (not marked but obvious wide grade after short climb up from falls) the entire way back down to rail trail near start. Lots of Pines, Hemlocks, and even Laurel towards bottom for green color even in early April. Perfect waterfall conditions! On way back stopped by nearby upper Darling Run falls. (Short off-trail to a uniquely beautiful multi-tier falls).

Pinafore Run Trail to East Rim Vista

Tioga State Forest
Wellsboro, PA
4.4 miles / 7.1 km
April 11, 2025
3rd hike of day around Pine Creek gorge. Started at Darling Run and jogged on Pine Creek Rail trail to base of Pinafore Run. Off-trail hike the entire way up with rock scrambling, climbing directly up falls, and two steep bank climbs for gorged in spots. Biggest surprise was a dead coyote wedged between the base of a big tree (seemed more like someone placed it there than getting stuck on its own but not sure). Perfect waterfall conditions, but since rainy/overcast, didn't continue up to vistas (which I have done before from top with Dustin & Sam and really enjoyed)! On way back, also stopped by nearby upper Darling Run falls (Short off-trail down to a uniquely beautiful multi-tier falls).

Castle Vista Trail

Ole Bull State Park
Cross Fork, PA
5.8 miles / 9.3 km
April 05, 2025
Started up to Castle vista, then went up Ole Bull Run using STS & Daugherty Loop Trails - loved the cascading stream & seclusion! Since I still had some time after checking in with the fam fishing on the park bridge, then hiked up the mountain on the other side of the park using the STS (beautiful vista overlooking Kettle Creek valley), then once at top of ridge just past MM28 turned around, and took a hollow shortcut back down to save time. So much beauty around God’s Country (aka Potter County)!
