HikingUpward.com has been a beloved resource for hikers in the mid-Atlantic region since it was founded in 2000 by Tony Van Vugt, an avid hiker originally from Australia. For over two decades, HU built a passionate community around the joy of hiking, featuring detailed trail write-ups, maps, and user reviews—all powered by a dedicated team of volunteers. As HikingUpward transitions offline, we're honored to continue its mission here on MyHikes, preserving its incredible trail content and making it accessible to more hikers than ever. The original HU team included: Tony Van Vugt, Founder – A lifelong hiker and volunteer trail steward with the Potomac Appalachian Trail Club and U.S. Forest Service. Bryce Allison, Chief Trails Officer – Based in Goochland, VA, Bryce brought a love for long treks and trail detail to the team. Jeff Monroe, Senior Contributor – A Charlottesville local, Eagle Scout, and trail map expert who hikes with his loyal companion Gracie. Zachary Robbins, Senior Contributor – Known for driving hours for epic hikes and documenting obscure trails throughout NC and VA. Adam and Christine Anderson, Senior Contributors – Founders of Virginia Trail Guide and passionate voices for trails across the Old Dominion.
