This is the original Mt Tom Trail loop GPX track from 2019, prior to the Mt Tom Trail rerouting in the Summer of 2020. The difference here is that the old trail used to start slightly uphill on PA Route 362 instead of at/across the street from the parking area. The trail used to meander along a moderate grade before reaching the service road; however, the new route is much steeper earlier on - making the new path along the Mt Tom Trail still a 'strenuous' hike, but now tougher than before! Old route length: 4 miles.
Got to the Red Sand beach earlier than on our first trip, but the beach was already pretty crowded. The trail out is still just as sketchy in some spots as in 2019, so hikers should wear proper footwear to get to the beach -- plenty of people hiking this in flip-flops and will likely get hurt. Thankfully the parking situation leads this beach to have a maximum capacity. Follow the road signs and only park where allowed. If parking is not available, you can drive around for a while and check again, but respect the locals and do not block the street or park on private driveways, etc.
Beautiful night hike along the Marginal Way after sunset to avoid the crowds. During COVID-19 the trail is still open and requires walkers to wear masks and keep 6-feet apart where they can. The trail is still very busy during the day despite COVID.
