Still a little bit of smoke from the Canadian wild fires. What a fun trail that makes you earn your rewards! Bull Run was beautiful and grinder. The ecosystem post 2008-fire was so rich. It was amazing to walk through the red pine stand from all the seeds released in the fire. Although, it made me sad to see how easy chimney rocks would be to access from the top only a couple of miles from West Rim Rd. I think everyone should have to face Bull Run to earn their vista! Chimney rock was great and the short bushwack southwest to lower point was a great place for hanging hammocks and a lunch break.
Not quite as difficult as noted: trail is typical of just about every other PA switchback ridge line in the region! The switchbacks, points of interest and fauna were lovely. Dogs love the water in Stone Quarry Run: we looped up the MST and cut across to Stone Quarry and down to Pine Creek Trail to make a loop out of it.
Lovely stroll to finish the last day of vacation. Been coming to this cliff-side for 40+ years. Asked my wife to marry me on these red rocks and our wedding was at Colton Point. I noticed earlier this year the famous little red pine at cliff's edge on one of the rock overlooks snapped off. It graced the cover of many a tourist brochure.
Rim2Rim2Rim - staring on the Colton Point side, crossing the creek and climbing to Lennard Harrison then reversing it. This trail is an old friend. My wife and two of three teenagers and 2 dogs joined us. Water was low on both sides and the creek but lovely none-the-less. Spotted an black vulture (Coragyps atratus) which is somewhat unusual as opposed to the more common red-headed turkey vulture which soar about the canyon. The stinging nettle is getting the height to "sting" on the lower Colton Point side.
My wife and two of three teenagers and 2 dogs joined me. I've never been to the point but the trail felt familiar - checking my purple lizard map confirmed the hike included a small section of the Green Monster. Naturally, I didn't read the trail description prior to hiking and spent a bit of time casting about looking for a trail for the easterly bushwhack. Gave up and just plowed through the thick mountain laurel. Blustery rainy day for a "green" fog-laden hike. A bit sad to see all the natural gas production activity in this area but I like affordable energy and who am I to hold back progress.
My wife and two of three teenagers and 2 dogs joined me. Observed grouse, coyote scat, numerous overturned rocks from a black bear. The mountain laurel is about ready to bloom. Small section where some sort of plant survey was underway with labeled plants of unknown meaning. I have ran and mountain biked the Green Monster but have never been to the point. We enjoyed beef-tongue sandwiches at the overlook.
This trail is sort-of an old friend. Hiked and "ran" many times. My wife and two of three teenagers and 2 dogs joined me. Rain was due any minute and it was lovely and blustery at the overlook. Shoes and pants yellow with pollen - both white pine and grasses. The area will be hammered by gypsy moth, green leaf detritus everywhere. My running coach says, "Keep you head down and keep going: when you see sky instead of dirt, you are at the top."
My wife and three teenagers and 2 dogs joined me. First time on this loop. Enjoyed the red pines early on then the spruce later. Stone cairn of unknown purpose. Dry, stream-bed climb near the end was a disappointment to the dogs. Lovely loop
My wife and three teenagers and 2 dogs joined me. This hike is an old friend, last time I hiked the area was in snow during bear season pushing off the various swamps.I promise I will haul in a canoe some day. The dogs enjoyed wallowing in the swamp mud. Bumped into a number of turkey poults which flew down the gasline
