The initial climb is tough and the trail has lots of loose rocks but the views from Raven's Horn are amazing. Much of this trail is alongside streams and the trail can be narrow. The western side of the trail loop is along the creekbed in many places with rocks and roots to navigate. There are quite a few creek crossings back and forth along the backside. There was a lot of snow on the ground during this hike, making it a little more challenging.
Love this hike ... it is up and down .. switchbacks on the way up break up the climb. The view and the bench at the top are worth the work to climb to the top. Make sure you make time to just sit and appreciate the amazing views...
Took the Mt. Tom Falls route to start and the new route on the way out. I actually prefer the old route to the new one. The steep part of this hike is challenging..once you finish the hike to the top, the remaining is flat or downhill. The mountain laurel is beautiful coming down the service road when in bloom. Ice spikes are helpful when there is snow on the ground.
