Otter Cliffs

The Otter Cliffs at Acadia National Park near Bar Harbor, Maine is an easy 0.3-mile out-and-back hike that leads to stunning views along Acadia's coastline from the Otter Cliffs.

Rock Climbing at Otter Cliffs

The Otter Cliffs are a popular rock climbing destination at Acadia National Park. According to the signage, about 5,000 rock climbers will traverse the Otter Cliffs each year. At the Otter Cliffs, climbers will find several large stainless steel bolted anchors that can be used to abseil and belay. With that said, the views from the cliffs are stunning especially for folks who have traversed the mountains that line the coastline.

Hiking to the Otter Cliffs Overlook

Even if you're not a rock climber, the Otter Cliffs are worth checking out for the views. The hike to reach them begins at the coordinates provided, at a small parking lot along Park Loop Road. Cross the road and take the Ocean Path as it heads north. It's a bit odd as of May 2025, but to follow the Ocean Path here, you must hike down some bedrock which looks as though you're leaving the trail. Follow the Ocean Path for about 0.1 mile until you reach a right-hand turn that leads down a steep hillside with large rock steps. Pass the Otter Cliffs Climbing sign-in station and walk out to the top of the cliffs where you'll find stunning views of Maine's coastline. From the Otter Cliffs facing north, you'll find views of Cadillac Mountain, Gorham Mountain, Champlain Mountain, The Beehive, Sand Beach, and Great Head. If you've explored any of those areas on foot previously, visiting the Otter Cliffs overlook is a great way to look back at your achievements. The views of the ocean here are unmatched as well with panoramic views from the tops of the Otter Cliffs. Once done, the hike back to parking is a short 0.15 mile jaunt uphill.

Parking

Visitors will find parking at the coordinates provided, located on the west side of Park Loop Road. The lot is large enough to fit less than 12 vehicles as of May 2025.

Pets

Dogs are allowed only if leashed and must be cleaned up after.
