The Native American Village Pathway at Newtown Battlefield State Park near Elmira, New York is an easy 0.4-mile one-way trail that features reproduction homes that Native Americans used to live in in the region, along with an overlook.
Hike Description
This hike begins along the Seneca Trail, located in the middle of Newtown Battlefield State Park and heads north to reach the replica Native American village. The village has a long house and four smaller homes that were built in a similar style, using local materials, that Native American tribes used to build and live in. The accuracy in the builds are likely not 100% spot-on, as there are nails in the construction, but it's an interesting find along this trail for hikers and visitors alike. Take the time to poke around the buildings or sit around the central campfire ring.
After visiting the Native American village, hikers can head north to reach an overlook. As of June 2023, the overlook is starting to fill-in more and the state has even planted two smaller trees here. Soon the overlook might not be an overlook anymore.
The trail ends on the eastern side of the Native American village where the Ridge Trail can be found.
