Loop around Takhlakh Lake (the portion we missed on our first hike, because of incoming thunderstorms), with a short excursion to the base of the lava flow.
Started from the Dalles Mountain Ranch Trailhead, at the northern part of the loop. Didn't do the whole loop, just wanted to see the basalmroot in bloom for some photography, and see how they were doing too. The blooms were already starting to fade.
Hiked up in early June. Some snow remained in the flatter section before Shorthorn Creek. No snow on the way up to there, but snow began at the first meadow, sometimes called "Shorthorn Meadow." No snow after Crofton Creek, but snow starting once again on the west side of the ridge line at the RTM junction. Didn't hike to the butte, because of bad weather and snow moving in. The off trail section would have been in snow drifts, too, if we had went.
Hiked this in late spring on a 90° hot day in 2016. The loop can get rather hot and dry, so I recommend doing it on a cooler day.
In 2017, I re-did this hike in fall, to see the quaking aspen grove and the vine maples displaying their fall colors.
On our second trip, we went cross-country skiing instead (last time was a snowshoe). We kept going, past the first initial viewpoint, to the base of the switchbacks that precedes the Terrible Traverse. The Terrible Traverse is a knife-edge section of the road that travels along the edge of the ridgeline.
