Treasure Loop & Jacob's Crosscut Hike

The Treasure Loop & Jacob's Crosscut Hike at Tonto National Forest near Apache Junction, Arizona is a moderate 3.2-mile loop hike that features beautiful views of the jagged mountains of the Superstition Wilderness.

Trails

This hike follows three named trails in order: Treasure Loop, Prospector's View, and Jacob's Crosscut. All of the trails lie within Tonto National Forest but the trailhead for the hike begins at Lost Dutchman State Park.

Hike Overview

Hiked the Treasure Loop Trail, starting at Lost Dutchman State Park in Apache Junction, Arizona. This trail is a scenic, moderate loop that winds through the lower foothills of the Superstition Mountains within Tonto National Forest. With the temperature hitting 87°F, it was a warm hike, but the dry desert air made it bearable.

Trail Experience

I started at the Cholla Day Use Area, which has plenty of parking and access to restrooms. The trail quickly gains elevation, offering panoramic views of the desert landscape. The Superstition Mountains dominate the background, with jagged rock formations creating an epic backdrop.

Along the way, I saw saguaros, cholla, barrel cacti, and ocotillo plants, some of which were blooming. Bright yellow brittlebush flowers dotted the landscape, adding pops of color. The desert was alive with birds, including cactus wrens and Gila woodpeckers.

After about a mile, I reached one of the higher points on the loop. From here, I had a perfect view of Weaver’s Needle and Four Peaks in the distance. The sky was clear, making for some great photo opportunities.

The descent was gradual, winding through more cacti and rock formations. A few shaded spots along the way provided short breaks from the sun. The Goldfield Mountains and Tonto National Forest were visible on the horizon.

Trail Conditions & Tips

• The trail was dry, well-marked, and in great condition.

• No water sources on the trail—bring plenty of water!

• Sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat were lifesavers in the intense sun.

• Despite the heat, I saw a fair number of hikers, including families and older hikers.

Final Thoughts

The Treasure Loop Trail is a fantastic, relatively short hike with breathtaking views of the Superstition Mountains. It’s perfect for those looking for a moderate challenge without a full-day commitment. If you’re in the area, this trail is a must-do!
