Summit Trail (Tiadaghton State Forest)
The Summit Trail at Tiadaghton State Forest in Armstrong Township, Pennsylvania is an easy 1.5-mile out-and-back hike that features a peaceful walk in the woods atop the North White Deer Ridge.Trails
This hike follows one named trail: Summit Trail. Note that the Summit Trail is much longer than 1.5-miles and is a longer one-way trail that runs the mountain ridge. This is just a short section hike.
Hike Description
This short hike begins at the junction of Skyline Drive and Sulphur Springs Road (PA-554) and follows the Summit Trail heading west at the main trailhead. The Summit Trail is wide with some rocky sections and undulates as it straddles the top of the North White Deer mountain ridge. During colder months, when the leaves are off of the trees, hikers will get glimpses of the Maple Hill valley to the south; however, there are no unobstructed views of the valley. If you wish to get a nice view before heading out, you can drive over to the nearby South and North View to get a better view of the valley. During this Halloween weekend hike, we got rained-out halfway through, hence the 1.5-miles out-and-back; however, hikers can follow this trail for much longer to extend their outing.
Parking
Note that parking is located across the street from the trailhead, located at the very-end of Skyline Drive. The parking lot is large enough to fit a dozen vehicles at most.
Pets
Dogs are allowed only if leashed and must be cleaned up after.
