Lost Trail

The Lost Trail at Muir Woods National Monument in Mill Valley, California is a moderate 0.6 mile one-way trail that leads from the Canopy View Trail over to the Fern Creek Trail. This trail is lightly-trafficked and is labelled as moderate for two reasons - if you're hiking up to the Canopy View Trail, it's not an easy hike, and because if you've already hiked the Canopy View Trail, going downhill on this trail isn't easy on the knees.

This trail doesn't have much to see until you reach the end where you meet the Fern Creek Trail where there are more ancient coastal redwood groves. You'll be hiking downhill back into the Muir Woods redwood groves, so you first start out in the canopy hiking along a steep ridge to the side of the trail.

Lookout point: Near the trail junction with the Fern Creek Trail, there's a switchback with views of Fern Creek below and the surrounding redwoods.

Fee: There's a $10 fee to enter Muir Woods for adults. For more information, check out their website.

Note: As of mid-May 2018, the Fern Creek Trail was closed off heading north from the end of this trail due to a tree that had fallen over the main creek bridge, so if you hike this trail, you'll need to head south on the Fern Creek Trail until that's fixed.
