Lake Nessmuk Dam Trail

The Lake Nessmuk Dam Trail in Wellsboro, Pennsylvania is an easy 0.4-mile out-and-back walk that leads along the northern shore of Lake Nessmuk's dam and features views of the lake.

Explore Lake Nessmuk's Dam

This short out-and-back walk is a great way to explore Lake Nessmuk without having to do much walking. During the warmer months, especially spring and summer, this is a popular spot for local fisher-folk to try their hand at fishing the lake. During the winter, if the temperature has been low enough, you'll even find people ice fishing atop Lake Nessmuk. Despite the short length, this dam is a beautiful spot to take-in the views of the water. As a local, I'd driven by countless times in the past, but finally decided to take a walk here during Thanksgiving Day 2024 after a ~3-inch snowfall. The snow covering the trees in the hill, along with the glassy water made for a scenic place to enjoy what Lake Nessmuk has to offer. No matter what season you choose to explore Lake Nessmuk's dam, you'll find excellent views of Wellsboro's largest body of water (despite being human-made).

Parking

Visitors will find a very small parking turnout near the coordinates provided, located along PA-287 at the north end of Lake Nessmuk. The parking turnout is large enough to fit less than 5 vehicles, max. Vehicles should never block the gate.

Pets

Dogs are allowed only if leashed and should be cleaned up after.

Private Property

Please note that the land just behind the service road gate, heading north toward the neighboring house, is private land. Please be respectful of the land owners and once you pass the gate, keep-left while heading straight for the top of the dam to stay on public property. Please be respectful of the private land owners.
