Hornbeam Loop

The Hornbeam Loop at Personius Woods (Tanglewood Nature Center) in Big Flats, New York is an easy 0.2-mile out-and-back hike that features a peaceful walk in the woods.

Trails
This hike follows one named trail: Hornbeam Loop (orange blazes). Note that as of January 2024, the trail's second half of the loop is completely overgrown. There are very-few blaze markers which made locating the second half nearly impossible -- once we located it, we realized the forest has overtaken the loop.

Hike Description
This hike begins on the north side of the main parking lot at Personius Woods and follow the orange blazes of the Hornbeam Loop. The trail meets up with the Cottontail Trail (red blazes) and then is supposed to continue onward as a loop, circling back to the parking lot, but as of January 2024 the trail's other half was completely overgrown, hence the out-and-back distance for now. This GPS track ends at the Cottontail Trail (red blazes) and then heads back to parking. Hikers can use this trail as a way to hop onto the longer Cottontail Trail at the park.

Parking
Hikers will find a small parking lot at the coordinates provided, located on the west side of West Hill Road in Elmira.

Pets
Dogs are allowed only if leashed and must be cleaned up after.
