Hiawatha Forest West Loop
The Hiawatha Forest West Loop at the Hiawatha Forest Open Space in Grand Haven, Michigan is an easy 1.1-mile loop hike that features an easy walk through the woods.This trail follows an out-and-back connector trail that leads to a loop trail in the western section of the park. Once hikes reach the loop, they can choose which direction to hike the loop in before heading back to parking along the connector trail.

Hikers can find parking at the coordinates provided. The parking area is not plowed in winter, though local residents and hunters tend take care of this themselves in the snowy months.

Hunting is permitted here, so hikers should wear blaze orange during hunting season.
About the Park
The Hiawatha Forest Open Space is administered by the Ottawa County Parks and Recreation and contains two plots totaling 365 acres of hardwood and red pine plantations. The trail system is very rudimentary and unmarked and hikers are permitted to go off trail. For example, the hike featured above actually tracks a short rabbit hunt undertaken by the author.
