Castello di Vezio

Planning a trip to Italy's stunning Lake Como? Don't miss an unforgettable walk to Castello di Vezio, a medieval fortress perched high above the lake in the charming village of Vezio. This short but spectacular walk is an essential bucketlist item for history lovers and Lake Como view-seekers alike.

Starting from the public parking lot on Via per Vezio, the total length of this walk is approximately 1.1 km (0.7 miles) out-and-back. This guide covers everything you need to know, from the historic village walk and entrance fee details to the castle's panoramic terraces and unique medieval features. Get ready to explore one of the best viewpoints on Lake Como!

Exploring the Historic Streets of Vezio, Italy

This walk begins with a picturesque stroll through the ancient heart of Vezio. As you leave the parking area on Via per Vezio, you’ll immediately be immersed in the quiet, historic streets of this quaint Italian village. Follow the signs for Castello di Vezio as you pass homes and small local shops. A noteworthy sight on your walk is the 13th-century old Chiesa di Sant'Antonio Abate, a must-see piece of local history. Along the walk to Castello di Vezio, visitors will find views of Lake Como from the high perch of Vezio's streets.

Entrance Fees, and First Views of Lago di Como

As you approach the castle, your first stop will be Il Ristoro del Castello to purchase an entry ticket. As of September 2025, the Castello di Vezio entrance fee is 7 Euro per adult. This spot is also perfect for a quick break; grab a espresso or a light snack before exploring Castello di Vezio. Once inside, you'll enter the first courtyard, passing unique statues before reaching the Terrazza Panoramica of Lake Como.

Terrazza Panoramica: Breathtaking Lake Como Viewpoints

The highlight of the castle grounds is undoubtedly the Terrazza Panoramica. This sweeping terrace provides some of the most breathtaking views of the central Lake Como area. From this vantage point, you can take in the entire southern stretch of Lago di Como, the iconic Bellagio peninsula, the town of Menaggio situated across the water, and the dramatic backdrop of the Southern Alps mountains. Be sure to have your camera ready, this is truly one of the best photo opportunities around Lake Como. Passing the panoramic terrace, visitors will walk further into the outer courtyard where you'll find olive trees and the famous ghostly paper mâché figures—compared to the Nazgûl (by Lord of the Rings fans)—that appear to guard the castle grounds.

Castello di Vezio Tower and Explore the Inner Fortress

The walk to Castello di Vezio continues by entering the main castle walls and stepping into the inner courtyard. Here, you have the chance to climb the central castle tower. As you ascend, you’ll pass fascinating medieval-styled exhibits, including armor, swords, tapestries, and flags. Reaching the top rewards you with even more sweeping, panoramic views of Lake Como and surrounding mountains. The courtyard itself is a peaceful area, featuring native trees like olive and pomegranates, and a small turret near the southwest corner offering additional medieval displays and views from the portholes. Look out for local residents, like the 21-year-old owl, Artu, who was housed in a cage in the inner courtyard during September 2025.

Returning to Vezio: Walk to Parking

The final leg of your journey leads you back down the path, offering new views of the charming village of Vezio. Make sure to schedule a quick stop at the Chiesa di Sant'Antonio Abate before reaching your car. Stepping inside this ancient church provides a peaceful conclusion to your visit. This walk not only offers stunning views of Lake Como but also a deep dive into the local history and culture of the region, making the Castello di Vezio walk an unforgettable part of your Lake Como adventure.

Parking & Directions: How to Get to Castello di Vezio

Visitors who plan to drive to Castello di Vezio will find a parking lot at the coordinates provided (46.010335, 9.291196). As of September 2025, the parking lot was large enough to fit less than 20 vehicles. For visitors to Lake Como who have never drive through these old village before, you will want to plan on driving through very skinny streets and steep mountain roads with tight switchbacks. The road that leads to parking, Via per Vezio, is no exception to this rule and in some places on the road, you may need to wait for an opposing vehicle to pass to ensure there's enough room.

Alternatively, you can hike up to Vezio from southern Varenna with a trailhead located near (46.006948,9.290013), however, nearby parking is limited and often full. On our trip, we had a difficult time parking near the trailhead in Varenna, so we drove to Vezio instead which was easier to manage at the time.

History of Castello di Vezio

The Castello di Vezio is a historically significant medieval fortress perched high on a promontory above the town of Varenna on Lake Como, Italy. Its strategic position suggests its origins date back to at least the Roman era as a defensive fortress. The current structure, which features the distinctive square central tower, was primarily built during the late 11th and early 12th centuries as a military outpost designed to control and defend the center of Lake Como. Legend holds that the Lombard Queen Theodelinda spent her final years near the area and commissioned the castle. Throughout the Middle Ages, the castle served as a crucial refuge for the inhabitants of Varenna and nearby Comacina Island during conflicts, notably the wars with Como. Over the centuries, it passed through the hands of powerful noble Milanese families before eventually becoming a privately owned tourist attraction that combines fascinating history with breathtaking panoramic lake views. You can read more about the castle's history on their official website https://www.castellodivezio.it/EN/the-castle.html.
