Ancient Puebloan Granary

The Ancient Puebloan Granary at Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument in Escalante, Utah is an easy out-and-back walk that leads to a roadside information kiosk with a view of an ancient granary.

This is not a hike but rather a short walk located on UT-12 in Escalante to reach a roadside kiosk that informs visitors about the ancient Puebloan people that once lived and named this area for more than 11,000 years. If you look carefully at the cliff face on the other side of the road (facing north), you'll see an Ancient Puebloan granary. The granary is easy to overlook but visitors can use the sight tube installed at the kiosk to help locate it. The Ancient Puebloans used this granary to store food like corn, beans, and wild edibles like rice grass and pinyon pine nuts. The Ancient Puebloan's descendants are the Hopi, Paiute, Navajo, Zuni, and Ute.
