About Rachel Carson Wildlife Refuge

Explore the natural beauty of the Rachel Carson National Wildlife Refuge in Wells and Biddeford, Maine. The refuge offers a variety of trails perfect for hikers of all skill levels, with opportunities to observe diverse wildlife and stunning coastal landscapes. The popular Carson Trail in Wells is an easy 1-mile loop ideal for a leisurely stroll, dog walking, and even strollers. Enjoy scenic views of a vibrant salt-marsh from multiple lookout points along the flat, pine-forested path. Be aware that the Carson Trail is very popular, especially during summer, so arrive early to secure parking and avoid crowds.

For a different experience, consider the Timber Point Trail in Biddeford. While the recorded section is a short 0.7-mile out-and-back hike showcasing Curtis Cove and a tidal river, the highlight is Timber Point itself, located further along the trail. Adventurous hikers can even access Timber Island at low tide, but be sure to carefully check tide charts to avoid being stranded! Remember to bring mosquito repellent, particularly when visiting near the saltwater marsh. Please also note that dogs and biking are not permitted on the Timber Point Trail.
