About Mt. Washington State Forest

Explore the breathtaking beauty of Mt. Washington State Forest in Mount Washington, MA, a haven for hikers of all skill levels. Discover the popular Alander Mountain Trail, a 6.1-mile out-and-back adventure that rewards you with panoramic vistas from the summit, including stunning views of the Catskill Mountains, Connecticut, and the rolling hills of the Berkshires. Be prepared for multiple creek crossings (with convenient bridges) – perfect for refilling water with a filter – and a challenging, steep climb near the top. Keep in mind that backcountry camping is currently closed, but a free campground awaits just 1.5 miles from the trailhead, and a first-come, first-served cabin provides shelter near the summit.

Extend your adventure on the South Taconic Trail, a 2.9-mile section connecting Mt. Alander to the iconic Bash Bish Falls. This moderate hike offers more incredible views from mountain ridges and culminates with the summit of Bash Bish Mountain. Prepare for ascents and descents, particularly a strenuous downhill section from Bash Bish Mountain. Adequate water or a reliable water filter is crucial for longer hikes. While backpacking is feasible, the ridgeline terrain might be better suited for hammock camping. Remember that the Mt. Alander trail offers alternative camping options, allowing you to tailor your experience to your preferences.
