The Belknap Crater Trail is rated as difficult due to its rough lava rock, steep inclines, and a final sandy section that can be slippery and slow-going. Be aware that the turnoff from the Pacific Crest Trail to the Belknap Crater Trail is unmarked and appears immediately after exiting the lava bed, just past the Little Belknap Crater Trail junction on the left. Proper footwear and a good level of fitness are recommended to fully enjoy this hike and safely navigate the terrain to the summit of Belknap Crater.
