Whirlpool Rapids Overlook

The Whirlpool Rapids Overlook at Niagara Parks in Niagara Falls, Ontario is an easy 0.7 km out-and-back walk that leads to a scenic lookout point high above the turquoise-colored water of Niagara Gorge's whirlpool rapids.

Walk
This short walk begins along the south side of Niagara Parkway where visitors will find a large parking lot that sits across the street from the Whirlpool Golf Course. The trailhead is located in the middle of the parking lot with a staircase that leads downhill to connect to a paved bike trail that runs along the edge of the Niagara Gorge. Once on the trail, hike downhill (heading southeast) to reach the Whirlpool Rapids Overlook.

The Whirlpool Rapids Overlook provides stunning views into the Niagara Gorge with its churning turquoise waters below. The Whirlpool effect is created by the Niagara River sending water into an elbow-shaped corner within the gorge where the water spins and turns before continuing downstream. At the head of the whirlpool are rapids that continuously feed this corner of the gorge. From the overlook, you'll find one of the best views without having to walk or actually hike.

Parking & Fees
Visitors will find a large parking lot at the coordinates provided. The lot is large enough to fit a couple dozen vehicles as of August 2024. As of August, 2024, there's a $8 parking fee.

Universal Access
Note that this route is not fully universally-accessible as there's a staircase at the trailhead; however, the majority of this route is universally-accessible. Visitors can instead park down the hill from the parking coordinates provided to essentially drive within 15 meters of the overlook.
