Volcan Mountain Trail
The Volcan Mountain Trail at Volcan Mountain Wilderness Preserve in Julian, California is a difficult 5.5-mile out-and-back trail that summits Volcan Mountain and leads to several viewpoints along the way.Trails
This track follows two named trails: Volcan Mountain Trail, Five Oaks Trail. The Volcan Mountain Trail (main path) is used for horseback riding, hiking, biking. Along the Five Oaks Trail, only hiking is permitted.
Hike Description
The Volcan Mountain Trail is an old dirt road that leads to the summit, but there is a cool side path with switchbacks to help on the way up, called the Five Oaks Trail. I recommend the side trail both up and down to enjoy the views and for slightly-easier hiking due to the switchbacks; however, this GPS follows the main path on the way down. At the summit there is an old stone fireplace and some placards with information about the sites and the views. Hikers can enjoy the views of Julian, CA and the surrounding area at the summit before heading back down.
Parking
Hikers will find parking at the coordinates provided, near the junction of Farmer Rd and Volcan Mountain Trail. Parking is located on both sides of the road.
Pets
Dogs are allowed if leashed and their waste should be carried out by the hiker.
