The Siyeh Bend Falls Hike at
Glacier National Park near Saint Mary, Montana is an easy 0.4-mile out-and-back trail that leads to the 40-foot tall and 425-foot long slide waterfall known as Siyeh Bend Falls.
Exploring Siyeh Bend's Waterfalls
This very short hike begins at the Siyeh Bend Trailhead located at Siyeh Creek along the
Going-to-the-Sun Road where hikers will find a trailhead on the east side of the creek. The dirt path leads downhill from the road before leading upstream along the east side of Siyeh Creek. Along the way to the trailhead and before reaching the base of Siyeh Bend Falls, hikers will find beautiful views of the creek and surrounding mountains, especially to the south. Note that you'll have to walk along the road from either the west or east from either parking turnout to reach the trailhead, but the road walk includes plenty of nice views. Once the trail begins to follow Siyeh Creek, you'll hit the base of Siyeh Bend Falls around mile 0.1 where you'll find a tranquil pool of turquoise water that the bedrock slide waterfall feeds. The trail then continues uphill as it runs adjacent to this super-long slide waterfall. You'll end up passing several scenic sections of the cascade which all are slightly different from one another including another tranquil pool near the "upper" portion of the cascade. At mile 0.17, you'll reach the bend in the Siyeh Bend Cutoff Trail where it begins to head eastward. Here, you'll notice a second waterfall, another slide waterfall, that slips into Siyeh Bend Falls at a convergence. This double waterfall convergence is one of the most scenic water features along this short hike as you'll find views of the double cascades with alpine mountains towering overhead. If you look into the mountain to the east, you'll find the massive Siyeh Creek Falls, which appears to be approximately 600-feet tall (based on topo maps). After exploring Siyeh Bend and its waterfalls, you can choose to continue hiking along this very-long trail that eventually leads to Siyeh Pass and Piegan Pass or you can take a short jaunt, like in this route provided, for a short 0.3-mile out-and-back adventure off of the
Going-to-the-Sun Road.
Vehicle Reservations
Depending on what time of year you visit, you may need to
reserve a vehicle entrance pass
to get into the park, in addition to a park entry fee (or annual
National Parks pass). Before planning this hike, ensure you've checked
the
NPS website for when and where Glacier NP vehicle reservations are required.
Parking
Hikers will find a couple of smaller parking turnouts located along
Going-to-the-Sun Road, located near the coordinates provided. Note that there are more parking turnouts along the east side of Siyeh Creek as well. Then turnouts are large enough to fit less than a dozen vehicles each and may require a bit of road walking to reach the actual trailhead.
