Salina Tunnel Trail
The Salina Tunnel Trail at the Pasternak Recreation Area in Avonmore, Pennslylvania is an easy 0.6-mile out-and-back dirt trail which ends at the Salina Tunnel, an abandoned railroad tunnel. It starts at the lake in the Avonmore Canoe Launch park area (at the right side of the lake, i.e. the side closer to the river) and goes west (downriver), while remaining not too far from the Kiskiminetas River.
Length (0.3 miles) is currently (2019) estimated one-way length.
The tunnel is old, dark and deteriorating, so caution, donning personal protective equipment, and a light is advised if entering the tunnel. Even going to the tunnel without entering is quite the an experience, as the tunnel portal is large (around 20 feet) and there is an old railroad bridge passing above the portal. Hike at your own risk.
While in the area, be sure to check out the Avonmore Branch Trail - the old rail-trail that passes over Salina Tunnel. You can hike this trail out-and-back for an additional 0.8-miles and is worth exploring while in the area.
Pets: Dogs are allowed if leashed and their waste must be carried out by the hiker.
