Rattlesnake Gutter

The Rattlesnake Gutter Trail in Leverett, Massachusetts is a lightly-trafficked, easy, 1.7 mile out-and-back hike through the little-known gorge of Rattlesnake Gutter. The trail leads through the gorge with a small stream that runs along the bottom of the gorge. The gorge features massive boulders and cliff faces that are known in the area for some of the best rock climbing. The cliffs are privately owned and off limits without a special permit for rock climbing; however, there's a local organization that works with the land owners to allow rock climbers to practice here.

Some of the cliffs have overhangs and caves - some sport graffiti, unfortunately, but are cool nonetheless. Rattlesnake Gutter is a very unique hike for the Amherst and western Massachusetts area. The trail itself is mainly wide and flat with gates at both ends of the trail where you can park. Dogs and biking are both allowed on this trail.
