Owen Pond and Owen Falls
Owen Pond & Owen Falls at Adirondack Park within the Sentinel Range Wilderness Area in Wilmington, New York is an easy 1.3-mile out-and-back hike that features the small cascade of Owen Falls and views of Owen Pond.Hike Description
This hike begins along NY-86 at the main parking lot for Owen Pond, at the coordinates provided, and follows the blue blazed trail east as it heads up the hillside toward Owen Pond. Hikers will find a trail registry about 100-feet from the trailhead - signing-in and out here is smart just in case something were to happen while out on the trail.
After signing-in, the hike heads uphill along a mostly-gradual grade with some moderate elevation grades in between.
Scenic Brook View - Mile 0.25
Hikers will pass a scenic bend in Owen Brook around mile 0.25. Note that the USGS and other map tiles show the brook as flowing south from here; however, over time, the brook has meandered its way north - hence it seems this trail was rerouted in the past.
Owen Falls - Mile 0.44
At mile 0.44, hikers will find a small but scenic off-trail waterfall located just down the hillside. It's not difficult to reach and for some hikers (such as myself), it's a nice stop to take a photo of this 3 to 4-foot waterfall.
Owen Pond View - Mile 0.7
Finally, around mile 0.7, hikers will find a small path that leads from the main trail southward to the edge of Owen Pond. Here, you get a nice view facing east of Kilburn Mountain as it towers above the pond.
Parking
Hikers will find a small parking turnout at the coordinates provided. The lot is large enough to fit a half-dozen vehicles or less.
Pets
Dogs are allowed if leashed and their waste should be carried out by the hiker.
