Key Takeaways

  • The La Grande Hermine Shipwreck Trail is a short, easily accessible roadside attraction in Lincoln, Ontario, offering views of a shipwreck and lighthouse.
  • The trail is currently marred by litter and broken glass, making it less appealing and potentially hazardous for pets.
  • Visitors can extend their exploration by walking along the breakwater into Lake Ontario for additional views.

La Grande Hermine Shipwreck Trail

The La Grande Hermine Shipwreck Trail in Lincoln, Ontario is an easy 0.2 km out-and-back walk that leads to scenic views of the La Grande Hermine Shipwreck and the Jordan Harbor Lighthouse.

This short trail is not a hike but rather a roadside attraction that features scenic views of an old shipwreck and a quaint lighthouse. Lake Ontario has had numerous shipwrecks since humans started sailing its waters, but this unique shipwreck sits in Jordan Harbor located ~15m from the shoreline. The trail that leads to the views is a bit of a mess as of August 2024 -- lots of scattered trash and broken glass that unfortunately hasn't been cleaned up by anyone, leaving the area feeling a bit sketchy. Visitors, including myself, ignore the less-than-quaint littered trail and instead focus on the scenic Jordan Harbor -- its lighthouse and the neat shipwreck sitting offshore.

This trail ends at the main view of the shipwreck, but if you wish to explore further you can walk out along the breakwater (rock jetties) that jut into Lake Ontario, for additional kilometers.

Parking
Visitors will find a large parking lot along the north side of North Service Road in Lincoln, ON at the coordinates provided. The lot is large enough to fit many dozens of vehicles and is used primarily for the Jordan Harbor Marina boat launch.

Pets
Dogs are allowed only if leashed and must be cleaned up after. Note that as of August 2024, there's a lot of trash and broken glass along this trail, so you might want to keep your dog at home for this one until things improve.
