Erwin Hollow Trail
The Erwin Hollow Trail at Erwin Hollow State Forest in Erwin, New York is a moderate 1.7-mile out-and-back trail that leads up to the top of nearby hills in the western side of the state forest. This trail is technically unnamed, but is drawn out on the Erwin Hollow State Forest's trail map in the park link provided. The trailhead is easily found with a yellow gate and a red stop sign at the entrance, blocking motorized vehicles.
The trail immediately heads uphill alongside a steep ravine that sits between the trail and Erwin Hollow Road. Eventually the trail will flatten out for a short while before continuing to climb uphill. As the trail reaches the western border of the park, hikers will not be very far from a steep hillside with potential views of the surrounding hills during the winter months, when no leaves are on the trees. I mention a potential view because there was no clear indication whether or not that was feasible.
Eventually the trail will leave the state park property, but we did not reach the terminating point on this hike. According to the topo map, it looks like the trail may continue to the top of a neighboring hill; however, there was no indication whether or not there was a clearing or view nearby - gut feeling says it's unlikely.
Turning around and hiking back to parking is easy, but can be a bit difficult on the knees as you make our way back downhill.
