Blackfeet Lodges Trail
The Blackfeet Lodges Trail within the Blackfeet Indian Reservation near Saint Mary, Montana is an easy 0.2-mile universally-accessible out-and-back trail that features breathtaking views of Saint Mary Lake and the surrounding mountains within Glacier National Park.Exploring the Blackfeet Lodges
This very short trail begins on the west side of US-89, located south of Saint Mary proper, and follow a paved and universally-accessible trail that leads to several viewpoints along the way. The trail features large metal lodges (or tipis) that were constructed in honor of the Blackfeet tribe that represent their culture. A self-guided historical information kiosk is located at the trailhead that educates visitors about these lodges -- the bottom section of the lodge includes symbols that represent Earth, the middle section is reserved for artwork that depicts owner's personal power, the top represents the night sky (in form of constellations), and the sticks that protrude from the top are believed, by some in the Blackfeet community, to represent the afterlife. As you walk the trail, you'll find views the entire way, but some of the best views are located right by the metal lodges. The views are expansive -- they include Saint Mary Lake and all of the mountains that surround its waters. Virtually all of the land that's visible from these lookout points are within the Glacier National Park boundaries, however. Visitors will also find a plethora of wildflowers along the trail like lupine and others.
