  • This 6.7-mile section of the Appalachian Trail is an ideal introductory backpacking route, especially when hiking southbound to avoid major uphill climbs.
  • Hikers have access to the Brown Mountain Creek Shelter at mile 1.3, featuring a privy and multiple campsites nearby for overnight stays.
  • The route offers reliable parking at both ends (Hwy 60 and Reservoir Road), making it a perfect choice for a one-way woodland trek or a shuttle hike.

Appalachian Trail to Lynchburg Reservoir

For hikers or backpackers looking for a one-way woodland hike along the Appalachian Trail, look no further than the A.T. to Lynchburg Reservoir for a 6.7-mile one-way trek.

We did this section of the Appalachian Trail as an intro to backpacking hike for our local scout group. By going southbound, you avoid the majority of uphill.
