The Twin Firs Trail is probably one of Mt. Rainier National Park's least-popular trails as it doesn't offer much to visitors in terms of views, waterfalls, or stunning scenery. Instead, this trail leads uphill through the forest as it passes some of the largest old-growth Douglas-fir trees that the park has to offer visitors. While the rest of the park has plenty of old-growth trees to admire, the Twin Firs Trail is a great way to explore these ancient trees without any crowds and if you're lucky, without anyone else at all.The seclusion of the Twin Firs Trail makes this short loop hike attractive to me as it was a really great way to take a walk through the woods away from the rest of the people at the park. It was also a great way to get my heart pumping as we cruised up and around these massive trees.
After the uphill climb is over, the largest of the old-growth trees have been passed, so the downhill portion of the hike goes by quickly. The trail eventually spits you out back on the northern side of the parking turnout as of June 2025, located about 100-feet away from the trailhead.
