Twin Firs Trail

The Twin Firs Trail at Mt. Rainier National Park near Ashford, WA is a short but moderate 0.3-mile loop hike that leads into a forest of old-growth Douglas-fir trees.

Explore Old-Growth Douglas-firs

The Twin Firs Trail is probably one of Mt. Rainier National Park's least-popular trails as it doesn't offer much to visitors in terms of views, waterfalls, or stunning scenery. Instead, this trail leads uphill through the forest as it passes some of the largest old-growth Douglas-fir trees that the park has to offer visitors. While the rest of the park has plenty of old-growth trees to admire, the Twin Firs Trail is a great way to explore these ancient trees without any crowds and if you're lucky, without anyone else at all.

The seclusion of the Twin Firs Trail makes this short loop hike attractive to me as it was a really great way to take a walk through the woods away from the rest of the people at the park. It was also a great way to get my heart pumping as we cruised up and around these massive trees.

After the uphill climb is over, the largest of the old-growth trees have been passed, so the downhill portion of the hike goes by quickly. The trail eventually spits you out back on the northern side of the parking turnout as of June 2025, located about 100-feet away from the trailhead.

Seclusion

As stated earlier, if you're looking for seclusion at Mt. Rainier National Park, then this trail is for you. We showed up around 4:30PM when many other trails were full of people and we found this trail to be completely empty. Most people skip over it and don't care to venture into this loop as much as the other trails at the park. For this reason, it's a great way to find seclusion and to escape the crowds.

Parking & Fees

Hikers will find a small parking turnout at the coordinates provided. The lot is large enough to fit less than a dozen vehicles as of June 2025. As of June 2025, there's a $25 entry fee for the park which is good for several days. If you plan ahead, you can speed up your entry with an Annual National Park's Pass.

Pets

All pets, including dogs, are not allowed on any trails within Mt. Rainier National Park, so please leave your dogs at home.
