Acadia Mountain

1.7 Miles Hard

Acadia National Park
Near Mount Desert, Maine

1

Acadia Mountain is a great 1.7 mile out-and-back hike in Acadia National Park, near Bar Harbor, Maine that leads to great views of Acadia in all directions, including the view into Somes Sound and the Atlantic Ocean. Acadia Mountain is also the only peak on Mount Desert Island that runs east-west rather than north-south.

Parking for the Acadia Mountain trailhead can be found on the eastern side of Echo Lake, just north of Hall Quarry Road. Cross route 102 to find the trailhead and follow the St. Sauveur Mountain Trail until you reach the first trail junction - this is the Acadia Mountain Trail junction. Take this left (heading north) to follow the trail up Acadia Mountain. The trail shoots up the west side of Acadia Mountain relatively quickly and the trail runs into some bald rock formations that make hiking a bit difficult - some rock scrambling may be involved here.

Once the climb levels off, you hike along massive granite formations, which leads you to the summit and lookout. From the lookout point you can see Somes Sound and the Atlantic Ocean. From here you can continue on the Acadia Mountain trail and turn the hike into a loop with the Man O' War Truck Road or head back on the same trail for a 1.7 mile round-trip.
